Studies & Activities

Uglemetan CMM activitiesare carried out in full compliance with the Russian Government commitment to reducing GHG emissions. The range of expertise in this field covers the implementation of feasibility studies on methane recovery and use projects at gassy Kuzbass coal mines, participation in domestic and international programs to improve the efficiency and safety of coal production and to introduce clean coal and unconventional energy use technologies.

The following activitiesare currently being successfully implemented by Uglemetan:

Feasibility Studies

Komsomolets mine – This project is considering the conversion of coal-fired electric generators or boilerhouses to coal and gas co-firing.

Usinskaya/Lenina mine –  This suggested project is considering in-seam bore hole drilling to a depth of 200-400 meters. As for methane utilization it is beingrecommended that their boiler house be retrofitted for coal and methane co-firing.

Pervomaiskaya mine – This project will result in the displacement of approximately 12,200 tons of coal each year and in an annual reduction of 6,750 tons of methane emissions as well as reductionsin sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate emissions.

UNDP/GEF Project

This project will mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by removing barriers to the implementation and financing of CMM recovery and utilization projects in Russia, while strengthening the institutional and financial framework for the promotion of CMM projects and facilitating implementation of selected demonstration projects. The initial focus of the project will be on the Kuzbass region, with further replication potential in other coal producing areas in Russia and elsewhere.

Other Initiatives

To support continuedCMM development Uglemetan acts as prime contractor for a number of internationally-supportedprojects. The following companies have recently contactedUglemetan with the respective contract proposals:

  • Toyo Engineering Corporation (Japan) – Identifying potential options to matchYuzhkuzbassugol needs and JBIC terms of financing for methane utilization projects.
  • Future Energy Solutions/AEA Technology Environment (UK)– Agreementson two contracts to facilitate the UK Government mission to Kuzbass andpublication of supporting information brochures along with assistance in site visits to Kemerovo power plants and boilers.

Uglemetan welcomes foreign companies, individual brokers and investors interested incoalbed and coal minemethane development in Russia’scoalmining areas. Our Company can provide its superior expertise in Compiling project-related technical and economic data and assist in:

  • Preparation of feasibility studies for methane utilization options as well as the assessment of project economic viability by a computerized financial model that considers costs, payback period, NPV and other aspects important for potential investors.
  • Defininggeologicalconditions and the most appropriate methane utilizationtechnologies with respect to gassy Kuzbass mines, which emit more than two billioncubic meters of methane annually.
  • General coordinationof methane recovery and utilization project implementation, including serving as a liaison between project developers, investors, the Kemerovo Regional Administration, and National regulatory bodies .
